In July of 1990 our very first course was held - an Experienced RiderCourse. The original intent of the program was to make better riders out of those already riding.
Since then many things have changed, but we at RENJ still believe even experienced riders can learn something by taking the “Experienced RiderCourse”! Motorcyclists in New Jersey need to stay sharp. The BRC2-LW (formerly the ERC) (no license waiver offered) is designed to further enhance the mental and physical skills that will enable the rider to better respond to unexpected road and traffic situations."
The BRC2 is offered at select locations. The course is specifically designed for two-wheeled motorcycles which precludes the use of sidecars or trikes. You should have at least 6 months or 3000 miles under your belt before taking this course. The BRC2 is a one day course, lasting 8-9 hours, taken on your own motorcycle at a cost of $125. The BRC2 is an approved “Defensive Driving Course” in the State of New Jersey, allowing for a 2-point reduction on your license for successful completion of the course. Successful completion requires 100% attendance, passing a written test and riding all of the range exercises. Most ERCs have classroom time in the morning then a midday lunch break, while the afternoon is spent on our training range performing the motorcycle exercises.
RENJ periodically schedules or provides by appointment “2-UP” courses. These courses are designed to involve the co-rider in the motorcycling experience. The course covers all of the material presented in the BRC2 as well as tips and tactics to help your “passenger” become your co-rider. Motorcycle range exercises are done “2-UP”, as is the classroom. Knowledge and skills that riders and co-riders alike can use to enhance their safety and enjoyment are addressed throughout. Completion requirements are the same as the BRC2 for riders and co-riders, with co-riders receiving completion cards as well. Prices are different for the “2-UP” course; see the application for current pricing.
Your insurance company may offer a discount for the successful completion of either course. Some motorcycle manufacturers and/or owner groups offer some form of rebates upon completion. Make sure you check to take advantage of any benefits available.
INDIVIDUALS OR GROUPS/CLUBS CAN ENROLL. Special groups are always welcome. Call the RENJ office to discuss scheduling a group class. All you need for the group class is 12 riders and a desire to learn!
- current motorcycle license
- their own motorcycle currently registered, self-inspected, and insured
- a DOT approved helmet
- protective eyewear
- Full-fingered gloves (leather is preferred)
- sturdy over-the-ankle boots
- long pants (denim is best) (No baggy or wide leg jeans)
- long sleeve shirt or OR jacket
- rain gear (if needed)
The BRC2 students also perform a general inspection of each student's motorcycle prior to the motorcycle being used by the student during the training. This is done for the safety of all participants. Be sure you and your ride are in tip-top shape for this fun-filled experience.
New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has added the Basic RiderCourse 2 (BRC2-LW no license waiver) to New Jersey's Driver Improvement Program. Students who successfully complete the BRC2 Driver Improvement Program, as presented by Rider Education of New Jersey, are entitled to a two point reduction toward points assessed against your license, regardless of whether you acquired the points driving your car or riding your motorcycle! This course has been approved as a state-approved defensive driving course. Completion of this course entitles you to a 5% discount on your car insurance.
